|Second beta of Iris Browser for Windows Mobile released
November 10, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.
Unlike iPhone where only one browser (from Apple) is allowed, because Steve Jobs has philosophy "my away or highway!", users of Windows Mobile can run many Internet browsers from various companies. While currently it seems that Opera Mobile 9.5 is the best one for Windows Mobile, Torch Mobile company has ported open-source "webkit" rendering engine (the same as the one used in Safari and Google Chrome) to Windows Mobile and now they are offering second beta already.
However we have tested it (in HTC Touch Diamond) and, while it indeed is 100% webkit-compatible (for example: rounded corners through CSS are supported) it is hanging and not working properly most of the time - simply a piece of junk... but you should give it a try in your phone too:
We’re happy to announce the second beta release of Iris Browser for Windows Mobile! This browser, available for download right now on our download page, represents our best browser to date. It contains over 100 fixes and improvements since the last beta release, and is incredibly fast and stable. The focus of this release was entirely on:
* Smaller footprint - we’re 10% smaller than beta 1!
* User interaction improvement
* Page rendering improvement
* From first launch, beta 2 may look very much like beta 1, but that’s really the end of the similarity.
